For our first House in South America, we wanted to reflect the city's rich cultural mix - and so the design team took inspiration from everywhere - from Brazilian modernism to the traditional Italian architecture seen throughout the local barrio.

As with all of our Houses, the building tells a story. Soho House São Paulo is set in what was once the historic Matarazzo Hospital, first opened at the turn of the 20th century by Italian-born Count Matarazzo. Now, its interiors honour this blend of Brazilian and Italian heritage, along with wider Portuguese influences.

The city's crafting scene also played an important role, with local makers helping us to fill the House with unique features, such as lights made from mouth-blown glass, hand-glazed tiles and pieces crafted from locally sourced marble. You'll see artworks throughout our Houses across the world, and the collection on display at Soho House São Paulo features artists based or trained in Brazil.

Although the surrounding streets are peppered with cantinas, bars and little theatres that come alive at night, the local barrio generally has a calm atmosphere reflected in the lime-washed walls and high ceilings of the House - it forms a kind of sanctuary, somewhere to let go of daily stresses. This comfort is mirrored in our latest Soho Home collection, with patterns and colours inspired by the city seen in the warm, soft furnishings.
