Abstract
Rejecting the realist representations of figurative work, abstract artists approach their art in a non-objective way that often aims to transport the viewer into another realm. Because these artworks don’t have a clear subject, they can easily add colour and contrast to the room without dominating the space, or taking attention away from other pieces.
Maximalist
A term used throughout the design world, maximalism refers to a spirit of excess, sitting at the very opposite end of the spectrum to minimalism. Usually bringing together a mix of vibrant colours and bold textures and patterns, maximalist artworks channel a “more is more” aesthetic that blends seamlessly with the most eclectic of interiors.
Landscape
Historically depicting imaginary scenes, landscape artworks now include paintings, drawings and photography depicting any kind of ‘-scape’, from cityscapes to aerial landscapes and even inscapes – psychoanalytic views of the mind. Because of the subject matter, these artworks can often bring a warmth and a sense of calm to your space.
Minimalist
Often characterised by neutral tones and a limited colour palette that help to create a cohesive look in similarly simple or calming spaces, like bedrooms, minimalist artworks align with a “less is more” philosophy. Not always representative of any particular subject, these pieces are defined by their simplicity, distilling art to its most refined elements.
Figurative
One of the most popular forms of art, figurative work focuses on real-world objects as its subject, rather than abstract artworks that take viewers away from reality. That doesn’t mean that all figurative art is hyper-realistic, though – but this clear subject matter can help to create a focal point in your room.
Geometric
Usually defined by their use of strict lines, obvious patterns and shape-dominant imagery, geometric artworks often include complex mathematical features or compositions that evoke a sense of order and harmony. These pieces can conform to either a minimalist or maximalist aesthetic, depending on the approach adopted by the artist, and so can blend with various interior styles.
